They thought I was skinny and scrawny

And… oh… so sad

They took me home and loved

And fed me

I thrived in the pilot’s care

I took off one morning with my pilot

The good natured… handsome… Don McBride

In weather so bad the plane shook in fear.

At 25,000 feet somewhere over Shangri-La

In Southern Tibet

Our C-46 bounced against the murderous turbulence

Though not in defeat.

The ice so thick on the propellers and windshield

It was hard to see

Somewhere inside that snowstorm

The plane climbed and was over

 The awaiting jagged peak

Of the mighty Himalayan Mountains

God’s creation…the awesome… Top of the World.

一天早晨,我与飞行员Don McBride 一起飞行

他可是脾气好又长得很帅气哦

那天天气很糟糕,飞机剧烈晃动

在西藏南部,香格里拉上空大约25,000英尺的高空

我们的C-46号机在致命的湍急气流中颠簸

螺旋桨和挡风玻璃上结了厚厚的冰层

所以很难看清窗外的一切

飞机攀升着

哦,它飞越了锯齿状的喜马拉雅高峰

A chunk of ice slams into the C-46’s fuselage

Propelling one green faced 

Air Force lieutenant from his seat

Stomping his feet

He screams…”Oh! God! I’m too young to die!”

Other replacement pilots in their seats

Too air sick to even care

They had flown half way around the World

To endure this flight in sick despair

The lieutenant sat down in his seat

Lit a cigarette with shaking hands

Oblivious to the sign that read

Warning…gasoline…flammable

Handle and transport with great care.

一大块冰从螺旋桨上滑落

重重地砸到了C-46机的机身

飞机的猛烈晃动使一位空军上尉从座位上向前倾

他脸都吓绿了

跺着脚,尖叫道 “哦,天啊,我还很年轻,不应该死的”

其他替补飞行员坐在他们的座位上

都因为晕机而自顾不暇

他们飞过大半个地球了

为了忍受这次糟糕透顶的飞行

上尉重新坐好

颤抖着双手点燃一只烟

毫无意识到一旁的标识

“警告…汽油…易燃.

请谨慎运输” 

My Captain… Don McBride

Left the cockpit to use the “john”

On the way down the aisle

He slaps the Lieutenant on the back

And says hang in there…

We’ll get there before dawn

Elmer knows the route by heart

You mean the auto-pilot

No…I mean…Elmer…my co-pilot…the bear

The Lieutenant

Now in a good mood

Laughs loudly

我的机长Don Mcbride先生

离开驾驶舱去上卫生间

走到过道上时

把上尉摁回到座位靠背上

说 “就那样待着…

中午前我们就能到达.

这条路线爱玛很熟的.”

“你是指自动飞行器?”

“不,不,我的意思是…爱玛…

 But then his laughter sputters

For when he looks into the cockpit

He sees me…

Elmer the CNAC Bear

With a cigar in my mouth

And earphones on

Clamped over his hat

And a flight jacket on

He sobs and utters…

My God! It is a bear!

但,接着,他被自己的笑声呛着了

因为他上前往驾驶舱看时

I turned my head

And showed my teeth

Removed my paw from the wheel

And took a swipe…

Get out of here

Return to your seat

This has been a tough…

One Hell of a flight.

The Lieutenant… by then… hysterical

 Wasted no time

In diving for the cargo compartment.

When Captain McBride returned to his seat

我转过头去

露出我的牙齿

并从方向盘上放下我的手

然后我用力挥手,道

“离开这,回到座位上去.

Who logged more hours

 Than most veterans…over the “Hump”

 Curled up in the my co-pilot’s seat

And went to sleep.

So ends the tale of one of Elmer’s flights
